Axalta Buys Two Coatings Firms

03.02.2017 -

US liquid and powder coatings company Axalta Coating Systems has acquired two firms since the beginning of 2017. The most recent deal, announced on Feb. 1, is with Century Industrial Coatings, a Jacksonville, Texas-based manufacturer of industrial coatings for structural steel, oil and gas, railcars and other OEM applications.

Well-known Century products include CenturyGuard water-based primers, Century Extreme epoxy and polyurethane coatings and Century EcoExtreme, a low volatile organic compound (VOC) family of zinc-rich epoxy and urethane products.

Michael Cash, Axalta’s senior vice president and president, industrial coatings, said the acquisition will provide both firms with the opportunity to offer customers an entirely new range of products with best-in-class service. CEO of Century Industrial Coatings, Don Harvey, added that Axalta brings a much broader national and global stage, giving its customers access to high-quality coatings, including E-Coat, powder and liquid industrial products.

Just a month earlier, on Jan. 6, Axalta Coating Systems acquired Ellis Paint, a manufacturer of industrial and automotive refinish paint based in Los Angeles, California.

Ellis Paint’s products are used in a wide range of applications and substrates including steel, concrete, wood, shipping vessels and construction equipment, as well as indoor and outdoor furnishings and fittings. Its portfolio includes Hy-Lux multi-purpose coatings, Shaft-Lac solvent-borne coatings, Maximus low-VOC industrial maintenance coatings and Engard heavy-duty industrial coatings.

Cash said Ellis Paint’s renowned commitment to providing innovative and sustainable coatings aligned well with Axalta’s focus on technology and business strategy.

Financial terms for both transactions were not revealed.

Axalta purchased three businesses in 2016. These included Geeraets Autolak, a former distributor of Axalta’s Cromax refinish coatings products in the Netherlands, United Paint and Chemical’s automotive interior coatings business and Dura Coat, a California-based manufacturer of coil and spray coatings.
