Authorities in Newark, New Jersey, have agreed to settle lawsuits against DuPont for ignoring orders to clean up pollution at a former pigments plant in the US city.

As part of the agreement, the chemical giant will take steps to remediate environmental issues at the site as well as paying the city $108,000 to monitor the cleanup process.

In March, the city filed lawsuits against DuPont and other, unnamed, companies who operated at the plant after it said they refused to remove toxic substances including Hexavalent chromium, lead and arsenic.

Earlier this year, the chemical group said it was already committed to a cleanup at Newark and would complete the job in 2016. DuPont occupied the site from 1917 to 1984. From 1984 to 1990 it belonged to Cookson Pigments.
