First Round - By Dec. 1, 2010, the European Chemical Agency (ECHA) had received approximately 25,000 registration dossiers for about 4,700 different chemical substances that are produced in or imported into the European Union, mainly in the tonnage band of over 1,000t/y.
Furthermore, it received more than 3.1 million notifications from approximately 110,000 different substances where basic classification data were communicated. It has been estimated that this huge effort has cost the European chemical industry already more than €1.2 billion.

Chemicals in 2012 - Growth in European chemicals output will be weaker than expected on 2012 because of heightened business uncertainty and inventory trimming, industry group Cefic said. The group's summary forecast of chemicals sector economists predicts year-on-year growth of chemicals output for 2011 is likely to be 2%, in line with the historical trend growth rate and against 4.5% expected in June. Expansion in 2012 will probably reach 1.5%.

The first four months of 2011 have been strong for the sector, with production up to 4.7% year over year. The trade group revised upward its annual summary forecast of chemicals sector economists, predicting growth in 2011 to reach 4.5%. This is up from the initial 2.5% predicted in November.

The Right Mix - When Uta Jensen-Korte took over as director general of The European Association of Chemical Distributors (Fecc) in November, she may have been new to the job, but definitely not new to the industry. She began her career at Bayer, later moving on to Cefic, and afterwards as a temporary agent with the European Commission. It's the mix of experience with both the public and private sector that Jensen-Korte brings to the table in her new role.

Lowering trade barriers for renewable raw materials would be a first step for Europe to reach its EU2020 goals, concludes a policy paper released today by Cefic - the European Chemical Industry Council. The Cefic paper, published during EU Green Week, notes that removal of import duties for renewable raw materials forms the heart of a much-needed market-based policy approach.
