Viiv Healthcare, a GlaxoSmithKline and Pfizer joint venture, will start manufacturing HIV medicines in Russia in partnership with local drugmaker Binnopharm. Agreeing a local partnership is a way for international drug companies to secure guaranteed sales in Russia, which wants to reduce dependence on imported drugs. Global drugmakers have pledged at least $1 billion in investments in Russian manufacturing, packaging and research and development.

Sanofi-Aventis reported a 13.2% decline in its second-quarter business net income to €2.15 billion from €2.48 billion last year. Business earnings per share were €1.64, down 13.7% from €1.90 in the 2010 second quarter. At constant exchange rates, business earnings per share decreased by 7.4%.

Sanofi-Aventis said it has completed its takeover of U.S. biotechnology company Genzyme. The companies agreed in February on a deal worth about $20.1 billion. The acquisition gives Sanofi access to Genzyme's business in treating rare diseases and is expected to help the company combat sales erosion from drugs facing cheap generic competition.

The French drugmaker said on Tuesday that the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) had cleared the trading of contingent value rights (CVR) under the ticker.

Genzyme Chief Executive Henri Termeer is set to walk away with nearly $160 million when the sale of his company to French drugmaker Sanofi-Aventis is final - and stands to earn considerably more should Genzyme's multiple sclerosis drug prove as successful as Termeer has predicted.
Termeer is set to receive compensation of $145.9 million from his Genzyme shares, stock options and restricted stock units on completion of the $20.1 billion deal with Sanofi , according to a regulatory filing.
