China Eyes Milk Test After Melamine Deaths Scandal

Researchers in China, where at least six children died in a tainted milk scandal in 2008, have identified seven stable molecules in cow's milk that they hope to use to create a test to identify tainted dairy products. Some 300,000 children suffered kidney problems after consuming milk containing melamine, an industrial compound that was added to artificially raise protein levels in tests. At least 50,000 babies were hospitalized, many with kidney stones. more

Helm and QAFCO sign distribution agreement

Qatar Fertilizer Company (QAFCO) has signed an agreement with Hamburg, Germany-based chemical distributor Helm to export and distribute 18,000 metric tons of Melamine to Europe. Speaking on the occasion, QAFCO Managing Director, Khalifa AI Sowaidi said. "The agreement was in line with QAFCO's marketing strategy to expand its product reach to the European markets." He further added that the agreement will be a milestone for future business relationships in the region. more

BASF Develops a New Cleaning Version of its Melamine Resin Foam

BASF has developed a new cleaning version of its melamine resin foam Basotect. The new grade is called Basotect W. It cleans even more efficiently and is whiter than the established version. It is certified to Öko-Tex Standard 100 in product class II, which shows that Basotect W is deemed harmless to health when used or processed. This means that no substances harmful to health are released and absorbed through the skin. The foam has also been tested to Japanese Law 112, one of the most stringent tests for formaldehyde in the world. more

DSM Sells Units To Help Shed Chemicals Roots

Dutch chemicals group DSM is selling its fertilizer and melamine units, putting it one step closer to shedding its chemical roots and making new acquisitions. DSM, which is in the process of becoming a specialist in food supplements and performance materials, said on Tuesday it would sell both units for €310 million to Egypt's Orascom Construction Industries. It would make a book loss of between €15 million to €20 million. more
