Styron Europe called today for an improved process to help customers and the industry in Europe by settling monthly contract prices for polystyrene in the first week but not later than the 10th working day of each month, effective May 1.

Styron, a global materials company spun out from Dow Chemicals in June 2010, has announced plans to change its company name to Trinseo.
The name change will be fully effective in all countries later in 2011; the company will continue to do business as Styron until that time.

BASF and Ineos Industries Holdings have announced their intention to combine their global business activities in styrene monomers (SM), polystyrene (PS), acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), styrene-butadiene block copolymers (SBC) and other styrene-based copolymers (SAN, AMSAN, ASA, MABS) as well as copolymer blends into a new joint venture called Styrolution. A letter of intent was signed by the two companies on Nov. 29. The establishment of the joint venture is subject to approval by the appropriate antitrust authorities.

European antitrust authorities approved the acquisition on Thursday of parts of Polimeri Europa Benelux, a chemicals group, by Total Petrochemicals Feluy, a division of French energy group Total. Polimeri Europa Benelux, which is ultimately controlled by Italian energy company Eni, makes specialty chemicals and commodity polymers.
Total Petrochemicals also makes commodity polymers, but the European Commission said the acquisition would not harm competition.

When the news broke in November 2009 that both Dow and BASF were looking to sell their styrene assets, the race to find buyers was on. Now, seven months later, BASF still owns its assets, saying that they are performing well and that they are in no hurry to sell. Dow, however, recently closed the sale of its Styron unit to global private investment firm Bain Capital Partners. Now a standalone company, Styron is setting out to maintain its leading position in latex and polystyrene production.
