Viiv Healthcare, a GlaxoSmithKline and Pfizer joint venture, will start manufacturing HIV medicines in Russia in partnership with local drugmaker Binnopharm. Agreeing a local partnership is a way for international drug companies to secure guaranteed sales in Russia, which wants to reduce dependence on imported drugs. Global drugmakers have pledged at least $1 billion in investments in Russian manufacturing, packaging and research and development.

Sanofi Pasteur, the vaccines division of Sanofi-Aventis, announced a research and development collaboration with the University of California, San Diego on an immunological approach to acne prevention and treatment targeting the specific neutralization of Propionibacterium acnes factors in inflammation. The financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Sanofi-Aventis reported a 13.2% decline in its second-quarter business net income to €2.15 billion from €2.48 billion last year. Business earnings per share were €1.64, down 13.7% from €1.90 in the 2010 second quarter. At constant exchange rates, business earnings per share decreased by 7.4%.

Sanofi-Aventis said it was considering "strategic alternatives" for its U.S. dermatology business, as it seeks to refocus its business on growth areas such as diabetes and cancer treatments.
The company's comment came after Bloomberg News published a story on Wednesday on how Sanofi was seeking to sell the unit, which the report said could be valued around €300 million.

Sanofi-Aventis said it has completed its takeover of U.S. biotechnology company Genzyme. The companies agreed in February on a deal worth about $20.1 billion. The acquisition gives Sanofi access to Genzyme's business in treating rare diseases and is expected to help the company combat sales erosion from drugs facing cheap generic competition.

Certificates related to Sanofi-Aventis's $20.1 billion acquisition of U.S. biotech firm Genzyme could begin trading on Nasdaq as soon as April 4, depending on the outcome of its tender offer.
The French drugmaker said on Tuesday that the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) had cleared the trading of contingent value rights (CVR) under the ticker.

French drugmaker Sanofi-Aventis plans to expand its Merial animal health business through bolt-on acquisitions, its chief executive said on the sidelines of a conference on Wednesday.
"Bolt-ons are going to be easier" than large acquisitions, Chris Viehbacher said. This was because of competition issues in the increasingly consolidating industry.
