Dow Corning has announced European investments in innovation and solar energy. The investment of up to $13 million will include two new buildings, with construction expected to begin later this year.

Dow Corning has named Wilfried Brachschoss as Global Solutions & Alliances Manager for its Solar Business Unit, which provides silicon-based solutions throughout the entire photovoltaic value chain.
Brachschoss will be based at Dow Corning facilities in Wiesbaden, Germany, where he will build and manage global partnerships to help deliver the full value of Dow Corning’s Solar Solutions. Specifically, he will work with equipment suppliers to provide global cost-effective dispensing solutions for Dow Corning’s Si-based materials.

U.S. specialty chemicals maker Solutia is set to buy closely held Etimex Solar, a maker of chemicals used in solar panels, for $326 million in cash, Wall Street Journal said. The deal is set to be announced on Monday, according to the paper.
Etimex Solar, a division of German plastics firm Etimex Holdings, makes a film that covers and weatherizes solar panels, the paper said. Solutia will look for a new financing package to help fund the Etimex deal. The firm may tap the high-yield market to raise new capital, the paper said.

DSM Functional Coatings has announced optimization of its KhepriCoat solar anti-reflective coating system. The improvements have already resulted in a significant contribution to the first multicrystalline-silicon solar panels in the world to achieve a conversion efficiency of 17%, which were produced recently by REC and ECN (Energy research Center of the Netherlands).
