On Oct. 1, Styrolution officially started operating as an independent company, following the approval of the relevant antitrust authorities. The new company is a 50:50 joint venture between BASF and INEOS, comprising the key styrenics activities of the two partners. Styrolution is the world's leading styrenics supplier.

Product Protection - Aqueous products such as emulsion paints, lacquers and a number of plasters partly consist of organic components that can be used as sources of nutrient by micro-organisms such as bacteria, fungi and yeasts. They are therefore susceptible to microbial attack and require optimum protection against biocorrosion. BASF has announced that it has successfully completed its acquisition of CRI/Criterion's global styrene catalysts business.
As part of this agreement, BASF has acquired CRI/Criterion's customer list, contracts and exclusive and non-exclusive licenses for intellectual property, including applicable patents and know-how in the field of styrene catalysts, as well as CRI/Criterion's styrene catalysts inventory. There were no plant assets associated with the deal.

BASF and Ineos Industries Holdings have announced their intention to combine their global business activities in styrene monomers (SM), polystyrene (PS), acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), styrene-butadiene block copolymers (SBC) and other styrene-based copolymers (SAN, AMSAN, ASA, MABS) as well as copolymer blends into a new joint venture called Styrolution. A letter of intent was signed by the two companies on Nov. 29. The establishment of the joint venture is subject to approval by the appropriate antitrust authorities.

BASF has announced the establishment of Styrolution, which will be carved out of its its businesses in styrene monomers (SM), polystyrene (PS), acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), styrene butadiene copolymers (SBC) and other styrene-based copolymers and establish separate companies. BASF will retain its global business in polystyrene foams. The SM/PS capacities in Ludwigshafen used to produce foams will also remain with BASF. The carve-out is to be completed by Jan. 1.

When the news broke in November 2009 that both Dow and BASF were looking to sell their styrene assets, the race to find buyers was on. Now, seven months later, BASF still owns its assets, saying that they are performing well and that they are in no hurry to sell. Dow, however, recently closed the sale of its Styron unit to global private investment firm Bain Capital Partners. Now a standalone company, Styron is setting out to maintain its leading position in latex and polystyrene production.
