Total Could Stop North Sea Gas Leak by End April

A leak at Total's North Sea Elgin gas platform could be stopped by the end of April, if everything goes as planned, U.K. managing director Philippe Guys said in a newspaper interview.
Guys told Scottish daily The Press and Journal that the French oil major planned to carry out a successful "dynamic kill" on the leaking G4 well before May. more

Total Sends Fire-fighting Ships Near N.Sea Gas Leak

France's Total sent fire-fighting ships close to the scene of a gas leak from its North Sea Elgin platform on Thursday as a large gas cloud led to fears of an explosion. The company said the gas originated thousands of meters below the seabed, which engineers said might mean that a relief well - one possible option to stop the leak - could take months to drill. Total has not yet found a way to stop the gas leak. more

BASF to Sell Share in JV PEC-Rhin to GPN

BASF has signed a contract to sell its 50%-share in PEC-Rhin in Ottmarsheim, France, to its joint venture partner GPN, a member of the French Total Group. PEC-Rhin produces CAN/AN (calcium ammonium nitrate/ammonium nitrate) fertilizers and the respective intermediates, ammonia and nitric acid. The company was established in 1966 and currently has about 180 employees. more

Total Petrochemicals Revamps Boilers with Honeywell

Case Study - At Total Petrochemicals polyethylene production plant in Antwerp, the facility wanted to find a way to increase its reliability and stability at the plant. At issue were two boilers equipped with single loop individual controllers. Unfortunately one boiler was not able to control the steam header pressure automatically without tripping on load upsets.

As part of a boiler revamp project, Total Petrochemicals turned to Honeywell to help design a state-of-the-art boiler/combustion control system according to its latest standards and philosphy. more

Ali Tarhouni: West is Failing Libyan Insurgents

Libya's rebel oil chief accused the West on Saturday of failing to keep up its promises to deliver urgent financial aid, saying his authority had now run out of cash completely after months of fighting.        Speaking to Reuters in a rare interview in the eastern rebel stronghold of Benghazi, oil and finance minister Ali Tarhouni said all crude oil production had now come to a standstill due to damage caused by the fighting.        more
