In Essen betreibt Evonik Industries mit dem Chemiestandort an der Goldschmidtstraße den größten Industriebetrieb der Stadt.

Auf einer Fläche von 32 Hektar ist das Werk Arbeitsplatz von rund 1.800 Mitarbeitern. Der Chemiestandort Goldschmidtstraße hat eine lange Tradition: Seit 1889 ist das Werk eine industrielle Größe der Stadt. Produktionsschwerpunkte sind Roh-, Hilfs-, Zusatz- und Wirkstoffe, die in erster Linie für die Herstellung von Konsumgütern und in der chemischen Industrie benötigt werden. Die Produkte sind Spezialchemikalien u.a. für die Herstellung von Haut- und Haarpflegeprodukten, Wasch- und Reinigungsmitteln, Autopflegemitteln, Kunststoffen und Kautschuk, Farben und Lacken, Etiketten und Klebebändern sowie Polyurethanschaumstoffen, die in Isolierungen, Möbel, Matratzen und im Automobilbereich zu finden sind. Der Ruhrgebiets-Standort verfügt nicht nur über modernste Produktionsanlagen, auch Forschung, Entwicklung und Anwendungstechnik sowie Marketing, Vertrieb und Verwaltung sind hier ansässig.
