US technology company Badger Licensing, a 50:50 joint venture between affiliates of Technip and ExxonMobil, has won a contract from China’s Zhejiang Petroleum & Chemical (ZPC) to provide a license, process design and start-up services for a new bisphenol A (BPA) plant.

Located on Daxiaoyushan Island, Daishan District, Zhoushan in Zhejiang province, the facility will have an annual capacity of 240,000 t and will be one of the largest single-train BPA plants in the world, Badger said. Basic engineering design work has started, and mechanical completion and start-up are scheduled for early 2019.

“ZPC’s integrated complex being built in Zhoushan represents a major investment in the refining and petrochemical industry in China. Badger’s innovative BPA technology will enable SPC to be a leader in the growing polycarbonate market in China,” said Badger’s president, Dana Johnson.

The contract follows a previous award by ZPC to Badger for an ethylbenzene/styrene monomer (EB/SM) plant at the same site. The plant will use Badger’s proprietary EBMax 1 and styrene technologies to produce 1.2 million t/y of EB/SM. Completion and start-up is scheduled for 2018.
