A consortium of Toyo Engineering, Hyundai Engineering Co., Ltd., Hyundai Engineering & Construction Co., Ltd., and LG International have won a contract to build a large gas chemical complex for Turkish state-owned company Turkmengas.  

The complex, set to go on stream in 2018, will produce ethylene, high density polyethylene, and polypropylene from natural gas produced on the Caspian Sea shelf.

Toyo will have responsibility for the engineering, procurement, and commissioning of the gas separation unit, ethylene and polypropylene production units.

The gas separation unit will use Toyo's "Coreflux" technology to recover ethane and LPG, and BASF's OASE technology for acid gas removal, Lummus' technology for ethylene production, and process earned by W. R. Grace-Conn. for polypropylene.

Polymer products produced at this complex will be exported and sold mainly in Asia, the EU and Turkey. Turkmenistan is a country boasting abundant reserves of natural gas, and it has been maintaining high economic growth with the export of natural gas.

Last month, the country's oil and gas ministry announced that the new plant would be built in Kianly, in the Balkan region. It would produce 386,000 t/y of PE and 81,000 t/y of PP.
