Lotte, Mitsubishi and RWE in US Ammonia Project

Lotte Chemical, part of South Korean conglomerate Lotte, has formed a strategic alliance with Japan’s Mitsubishi Corporation (MC) to jointly develop stable large-scale green and blue “clean ammonia” supply chains in Asia, Europe and the US.

Together with German energy giant RWE, the Asian partners have signed a Joint Study Agreement (JSA) to stem a large-scale integrated clean ammonia production and export project in the Port of Corpus Christi, Texas on the US Gulf coast.

As part of the pact, the companies said they will jointly study the feasibility of building a large-scale ammonia facility that integrates green and blue ammonia production and leverages common infrastructure for international exports, with a focus on Asia and Europe.

Under the plans, the first facility would be built in the US up to 2030, followed by a phased build-out of production capacity with multiple production units. In the final build-out stage, this project could potentially produce up to 10 million tons of clean ammonia per year.

The companies said they plan to pool their complementary expertise to develop the project. Negotiations with the Port of Corpus Christi Authority about acquiring land are in progress.
