UPDATE 2: Chemical Site Closures in Japan

16.03.2011 -

Many chemical companies have production sites and administrational offices in Japan. Here is a short compilation of current closings.

BASF: BASF reports that some sites are now shut down as a precaution. Major sites are shut down, namely Totsuka (Kanagawa prefecture) Isohara (Ibaraki Prefecture), Koriyama (Fukushima Prefecture), Sendai (Miyagi Prefecrure), Morioka (Iwate Prefecture) and Kitatone (Ibaraki Prefecture). Some sites in unaffected areas remain operational. BASF, which has production sites all over Japan, has about 1,740 employees in the country, none of whom were injured. The company produces mainly technical rubbers, dispersions, coatings and construction chemicals in Japan.

Evonik: Evonik's has reported that all of its approximate 330 employees in Japan are safe and that the company experienced no damage from the earthquake and resulting tsunami. The company's larger production sites are located in the southern part of Japan, which has not been affected. Evonik has temporarily closed it technical center for pharmaceutical polymers and its production site for precious metal catalysts in Tsukuba, which is located about 65 kilometers northeast of Tokyo. It is currently unclear whether the planned 2011 opening of the company's €150 million production facility for monosilane and Aerosil-fumed silica in Yokkaichi will be postponed or not. Yokkaichi is in southern Japan.

Bayer: According to Bayer, all four of its production sites were unaffected and are running normally. While none of the company's 3,660 employees was injured, the company has reported damage to some of its buildings. The amount of damage caused is currently unknown.

Lanxess: Lanxess has about 100 employees in Japan and said there were no injuries or damage to buildings. The  company said it has closed its Japan headquarters in Tokyo; the employees will work from Toyohashi, where subsidiary Rhein Chemie has a production facility for rubber chemicals. That facility is up and running as usual and has not been affected by the crisis or power outages. Toyohashi is about 250 km southwest of the capital. Lanxess also has a customer and service center for its Leather business unit in Himeji, about 500 km southwest of Tokyo.
