Fire in Ludwigshafen Warehouse Causes Millions in Damage

A fire in broke out in a Ludwigshafen, Germany, warehouse owned by Panalpina containing 4,800 tons of materials, mostly Styropor granules on Saturday; no one was in the building at the time. Fire departments from several surrounding cities as well as BASF's plant fire department worked to get the fire under control and extinguished. A spokesperson for BASF estimated damages to be upwards of millions of euros; the 9,500 m2 warehouse belonged to a logistic company working for BASF. Although the smoke did not present an immediate danger, the population the Rhein-Neckar and southern Odenwald regions were advised to stay inside with windows closed. The smoke was visible at least 30 km northeast of the scene. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. (bhs)
