Huntsman's quarterly profit beat Wall Street's expectations by a wide margin due to higher prices for chemicals used in insulation and paint, sending the company's shares up more than 11%.
The results show that demand is beginning to pick up in key markets Huntsman serves, including clothing, housing, construction and auto production.

Huntsman has acquired EMA Kimya Sistemleri Sanayi ve Ticaret, an MDI-based polyurethanes systems house in Istanbul, Turkey. As a result of the deal, EMA will become part of Huntsman's Polyurethanes division and will be known as Huntsman-EMA. EMAs' two major shareholders, Gulum Kabil and Engin Tataroğlu, will continue to manage the business operations of the new venture.

BASF will build the world's largest single-train TDI (toluene diisocyanate) plant in Europe. The plant will have a capacity of 300,000 metric tons per year and will be fully integrated with precursor production. The TDI plant will be located at one of the company's integrated Verbund sites in Antwerp, Belgium or Ludwigshafen, Germany and will start production in 2014.

Dow Formulated Systems and E.A. Juffali & Brothers announced they signed a business alliance in their polyurethane systems business. In addition to combining both companies' offerings of products and services, the alliance anticipates the construction of a polyol blends manufacturing plant, planned for 2010, in the city of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The planned facility will produce Dow-formulated polyols, and the respective Dow polyurethane systems will be marketed in the region.

In a move to further build on its operations in Russia, Huntsman Polyurethanes Russia, Huntsman located in the U.S., has opened a new systems house in Obninsk, Russia. The new production plant is located at the site of ZAO Huntsman-NMG, the joint venture Huntsman entered into with PUR-specialist ZAO NMG-Polikon in 2007. According to a report from Plastics Information Eurpoe, the new systems house will be run by ZAO Huntsman-NMG, and the group was not looking to deviate from its existing strategy in Russia.
