Brenntag Buys Canada’s Alpha Chemical

26.12.2020 - German-headquartered multinational chemical distributor Brenntag has agreed to buy Canada’s Alpha Chemical for an undisclosed sum.

Based in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Alpha Chemical supplies chemicals to several major industries that include oil & gas, mining, water treatment and aquaculture.

Lars Schneider, president of Brenntag Canada, said Alpha Chemical’s infrastructure, capabilities and personnel will support the expansion of its new Brenntag Essentials and Brenntag Specialties divisions in Canada.

“In addition to providing ready access to the oil & gas offshore upstream market in Atlantic Canada, the state-of-the-art facility in Newfoundland will allow us to better service the other important regional markets as well,” added Anthony Gerace, managing director mergers & acquisitions at Brenntag Group.

Alpha Chemical generates annual sales of approximately $12 million. The transaction is expected to close in early January, subject to the usual conditions.

In 2018, Brenntag acquired specialty chemicals and ingredients distributor Pachem Distribution and Canada Colors & Chemicals. In 2016, it gained some Canadian coverage, notably in parts of Ontario and Southern Quebec, with the purchase of Noco’s lubricants business.
