Deepening its footprint in Brazil, Clariant has announced a strategic alliance with Beraca, a leading player in natural, sustainable and innovative ingredients.

Under the terms, the Swiss specialty chemicals producer will acquire a 30% share of the Brazilian company's Health and Personal Care division, with a provision to increase its shareholding at a later date.

Michael Willome, head of Clariant's Industrial & Consumer Specialties business unit, said the deal - still subject to certain conditions precedent, as well as regulatory approvals - will enhance his company's innovation capabilities in the field of natural ingredients for cosmetics and personal care applications and "enlarge the range of valuable solutions" it can offer.

"Beraca is a key cornerstone in enhancing Clariant's portfolio with regard to natural ingredients, biological active extracts and natural emollients," Manlio Gallotti, head of Clariant's ICS Latin America, added.

Tapping Clariant's "extensive technological expertise" in chemistry and cosmetics' applications "will be essential to upgrade Beraca's portfolio and bring it to new geographies," said Beraca president Ulisses Sabara.
