Hexion and Poland’s D&R in Resin Collaboration

05.08.2020 - US thermoset resins and specialty chemicals company Hexion is collaborating with Poland’s D&R Dispersions and Resins on the first commercial-scale production of the former’s VeoVa silane technology, which is free of isocyanates.

Hexion said demand for VeoVa has grown quickly since its launch in March 2019, and the partnership with D&R Dispersions and Resins offers strategic manufacturing capabilities in eastern Europe to meet production needs for specialty applications.

Arkadiusz Kowalczyk, vice president of D&R Dispersions and Resins, described the technology as a “real breakthrough in the resin industry” and said: “We are continuously exploring alternative monomeric raw materials and technologies; this collaboration allows us to create truly innovative and sustainable binder solutions for the coatings industry.”

The companies did not reveal any further details of their plans for commercial production. D&R Dispersons and Resins already manufactures alkyd and acrylic resins and water dispersions – copolymers of acrylic monomer, styrene and vinyl acetate – at its location in Wloclawek.

Earlier this year, Hexion agreed the sale of its manufacturing site in Yumbo, Colombia, to a joint venture led by Puerto Rico’s Master Paints & Chemical Corp. At the Yumbo site it produced decorative paints under the Algreco brand, among others, as well as private-label paints, and also had resin capacity for both alkyd and water-based paints.

Hexion’s chairman, president and CEO Craig Rogerson said the divestment is consistent with the ongoing optimization of its portfolio. Financial terms were not disclosed.
