SABIC, SD & Linde Enter Strategic Decarbonization Collaboration

13.12.2023 - SABIC, Scientific Design (SD), and Linde Engineering have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate on decarbonizing the SD Ethylene Glycol Process.

The partnership aims to leverage SABIC’s CO2 recovery technology in SD-licensed glycol plants globally to achieve sustainable and low-carbon ethylene oxide and ethylene glycol production, setting industry standards for carbon-neutral practices.

Bob Maughon, Executive Vice President, Technology & Innovation, CTO & CSO at SABIC commented, “Our carbon capture strategy and this new opportunity to collaborate with Linde Engineering, demonstrates the importance of leveraging our technological expertise to transform waste products into valuable resources demonstrating the Circular Carbon Economy framework.”

John van der Velden, Senior Vice President Global Sales & Technology, Linde Engineering, stated, “By combining SABIC’s SD gas processing technology with Linde’s expertise in capturing and liquefying CO2, plus our strong track record in designing, executing and operating plants, we hope to find solutions that support a carbon neutral petrochemical industry.”

The collaboration taps into SABIC's leading CO2 technology, showcased in the world's largest carbon capture and utilization plant. With the capacity to recover 500,000 metric tons of CO2 annually, the technology turns emissions from ethylene glycol production into valuable products like urea, methanol, and liquefied CO2 for various industries.

In 2021, SABIC pledged a 20% reduction in emissions by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2050. The roadmap focuses on energy efficiency, renewables, electrification, CCUS, and hydrogen. The collaboration with SD and Linde Engineering is a vital move towards a sustainable, carbon-neutral future.
