EX-Cell Antifoam Increases Consistency in Cell Culture Manufacturing

SAFC Biosciences, a business segment of SAFC, a member of the Sigma-Aldrich Group announced the introduction of EX-Cell Antifoam, a non-animal origin solution that enhances foam control in cell culture bioreactors to increase the consistency, efficiency and stability in cell culture manufacturing.
The EX-Cell Antifoam solution is formulated from a 30% simethicone emulsion and validated by a simethicone quantification assay that confirms lot-specific concentration. This USP Grade non-ionic emulsion (simethicone) is designed for use in the pharmaceutical and veterinary biological industries to aid in the control of cell culture foaming in bioreactors. Through formulation optimization, utilization of a quantitative assay and understanding the non-specific binding of simethicone, SAFC Biosciences is able to report the actual simethicone concentration of the gamma irradiated finished material, producing a stable end product, thus ensuring product consistency, predictability and desired performance with at least a 13 month shelf life. EX-Cell Antifoam is ready to use and should be directly supplemented into culture systems to prevent or eliminate foaming that occurs due to mixing and shear forces.
Bruce Lehr, SAFC Biosciences Director of Marketing, comments: "We anticipate strong market response to EX-Cell Antifoam's improved performance and consistency. Our product development objectives continue to be heavily influenced by the market's desire for tools that facilitate consistency and efficiency in cell culture. We believe EX-Cell Antifoam is another way of supporting those needs."
